Makah is also known as Makah Al-Mukarramah. Makah is the place where God's message was first revealed to him and the city to which he returned after the migration to Medina. The Holy Mosque in Makah houses the Kaaba, in the corner of which is set the Black Stone which marks the starting point for the seven circumambulations of the Holy Mosque which every hajji must complete.

The focal point of Makah is the Kaaba, the "House of God" believed by Muslims to have been built by Abraham and his son Ishmael, and which is covered in a gold-embroidered black fabric. Pilgrims circle the Kaaba seven times and may also try to touch or kiss its cornerstone, the Black Stone. In Makah pilgrims may drink from the well of Zamzam. Its water of Zamzam is believed to have special properties.
